I challenge you to read the SMART RVing article on Page 12 and not be stirred by the description of the veteran walking in a Branson, Missouri, parade and his determination to carry on after falling. Regardless of this gentleman’s injury, he would not give up or give in. Rather, he took care of business and fought through the challenge.
That story could be describing just about any veteran, regardless which branch of military and the years or decades served. Veterans share qualities that serve them well in service to our country and translate well to the civilian workplace.
- Character — Veterans are bound by the virtues of honor, courage, commitment, loyalty and integrity.
- Trust — A critical component for mission success, trust is at the foundation of a veteran’s character.
- Accountability — No excuses. Individual accountability is something service members expect of themselves and take pride in.
- Leadership and Followship — Intense leadership expectations begin Day One in the military as does learning how to be a good follower.
- Teamwork — Vets place the greater good of the team success over their individual goals.
- In November 2020, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association launched its “Vets Power Us” initiative to recruit, hire and honor our military veterans. With more than 40% of veterans coming from our rural communities, facilitating the connection between job-seeking veterans and electric cooperative career opportunities is a win-win undertaking.
In addition to the qualities they share, veterans bring to the civilian workplace extensive technical and safety skills, and the ability to learn new concepts and skills. They are mission driven and adaptable with superior problem-solving skills. They know how to work in high-pressure and fast-paced environments. In essence, veterans have transferrable skills in line with electric co-ops.
