Five exhibitions comprise the 125th Annual Midwest Art Exhibition through May 28, 2023, at the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery. The shows include works by Wichita native Dave Yust, now of Fort Collins, Colorado; paintings and ceramic sculpture by Diana Unrein of Hays; woodcuts by Deby Gilley of Mountain Grove, Missouri; miniature books by Ruth Downes of Sea Ranch, California; and paintings and prints by former Bethany College instructor Charles B. Rogers (1911-1987).
The Midwest Art Exhibition was founded in 1899 by three local Lindsborg artists – Birger Sandzén, Carl Lotave, and G. N. Malm – as a complement to the annual Messiah Festival held at Bethany College. Today, it represents the longest running annual art exhibition in Kansas and primarily features works by artists invited by the Sandzén Gallery or from the Gallery’s permanent collection.
- Evidence of Gravity and Other Works features paintings and prints by Dave Yust.
- Diana Unrein‘s exhibition Thalassa will feature paintings and ceramic sculpture.
- Deby Gilley has exhibited previously at the Gallery and is well-known for her traditional and color woodcuts.
- Californian Ruth Downes will be showing examples of her miniatures.
- Works by Charles B. Rogers, who followed Birger Sandzen as the head of the art department at Bethany College, will be the final exhibition featured.
The Sandzén Gallery is located at 401 N. First Street in Lindsborg. Hours are 10:00am-5:00pm Tuesday through Saturday, and 1:00pm-5:00pm on Sunday. Admission is free, with donations appreciated. Docent tours for groups are available by two-week advance appointment. For more information about Birger Sandzén, the Gallery, and these exhibitions visit the Gallery’s website or phone 785-227-2220.
